Chapter 9
With my pajamas on and the door locked, deadbolted, and chained, I finally feel like I can sit and take stock of my evening. My whole weekend needs to be addressed, but I can’t process beyond one evening at a time. Everything started out so nice and the plan was so simple. Go on a date with Oly, forget Fletch, and forget my crappy club experience with Hali. I can only handle the silence so long before I start hearing things, so I turn the TV on, keeping the volume down. My brain knows Jake isn’t coming to my house, but my fears aren’t wanting to listen to my brain. My fears are also worried about Hali being with Jake and worried that something may have happened to Oly. Him leaving without a word doesn’t seem right. Maybe he went days without calling, but he seemed really into the date. I glance up from my bare toes curling into the carpet to the TV and I can’t fight the smile. Derek Zoolander and Hansel having a walk-off judged by David Bowie. Classic. Once Hansel magically removes his underwear without taking off his pants, my worry gets the best of me and I text Hali.
Aimee: I know what you think, but I have no interest in Jake. None. He got really scary with me tonight, so please be careful, Hali. I hope the rest of your weekend is fun, but be safe.
I toss the phone on the cushion next to me and go back to watching the movie. No matter how tired I am, my brain keeps racing and not even comedy genius can slow it down. I pick up my phone to check in with Sienna just as a text comes in.
Oly: Just got my phone charged. Please tell me you made it home or somewhere safe? I ran to get more of Mason’s expensive ass water and when I came back you were gone. Please tell me you’re okay.
Oly: I’m kinda panicking here.
Aimee: I’m fine. Wasn’t feeling well, but couldn’t find you, so I came home.
Oly: You could have asked the guys where I went. The dude with your friend, he didn’t bother you, did he? He kept staring at you through our set. Are you sick?
Aimee: No, just a headache, not much sleep lately, and no. I promise I’m okay.
Oly: Well, get some rest. Call you soon?
Oly: And this time I really will.
I laugh at the winking emoji.
Aimee: Please do. Good night, Oly.
I stretch out on the couch, tucking the throw pillow under my head and call Sienna only for it to go to voicemail. I don’t leave a message. It’s late and she did homework all night, so I’m sure she crashed. Focusing on the movie is impossible, no matter how funny it is. Every creak, or sound from the neighbors has me jumping and glancing at the door. Each car door slamming sends me into a mini panic attack, and I wish more than anything that I wasn’t alone.
